September is Mold Awareness Month
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes September as National Mold Awareness Month. This month is designed to inform, educate and raise awareness about the adverse health effects due to exposure to indoor molds.
MOLD FACTS
- Mold is a problem that arises from high humidity in a home
- This fungus feeds on organic substances and survives in moist conditions
- Mold is linked to allergies and produces harmful chemicals such as VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and mycotoxins
- Health hazards related to mold include coughing, wheezing, running eyes/nose, skin rashes, muscular aches, loss of appetite, inability to concentrate, and fatigue

Preventing future mold growth
Here are some steps you can take to prevent mold from growing in your home.
KEEP HUMIDITY LOW
High heat and humidity along with stagnant air provide the perfect breeding ground for mold.
VENTILATE
Dry out and ventilate areas of your home regularly, especially small, damp areas of your home such as your bathrooms. Bathrooms require ventilation fans to run for at least 30 minutes after a shower or bath to ensure that the area is adequately dry in order to prevent mold.
FIX LEAKS
Be on the lookout for any leaky pipes or plumbing issues that can create excess moisture in small, poorly ventilated spaces such as the basement, attic, bathrooms and garage. If you see any leaky pipes, repair them immediately and check the area for mold.
REDUCE MOISTURE
The best way to prevent mold growth in your home is to maintain a healthy humidity level with a dehumidifier.
